Unfortunately, there\u2019s not yet a way to combat aging, so it\u2019s even more important to address these lifestyle factors as we get older.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to reduce high blood pressure<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Left unchecked, high blood pressure can cause major damage to your heart and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ifixhearts.com\/2021\/09\/12\/what-you-need-to-know-about-cardiovascular-disease\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cardiovascular system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Long-term illness requires extensive medical intervention and, in many cases, a visit to a heart surgeon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is that for many people, blood pressure is addressable with simple lifestyle changes. But in cases of extremely high blood pressure or when lifestyle changes don\u2019t have a measurable impact, there are a number of medications doctors can prescribe:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Diuretics<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 reduce the levels of sodium in your body.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>ACE inhibitors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 stop your body from producing chemicals that narrow blood vessels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Calcium channel blockers <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 relax your blood vessels and may slow your heart rate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Vasodilators<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 prevent the narrowing of arteries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Central-acting agents<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 prevent your brain from sending signals to increase your heart rate and narrow your arteries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Renin inhibitors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 slow the production of renin by your kidneys, as it causes an increase in blood pressure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Alpha blockers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 reduce the effect of natural chemicals that narrow your blood vessels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Beta Blockers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 widen your blood vessels and cause your heart to beat slower.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s far better (and more cost-effective) to prevent high blood pressure from cropping up in the first place.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to prevent high blood pressure<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ifixhearts.com\/2021\/09\/05\/you-can-prevent-heart-disease-heres-how\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">greatest tragedies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I see with my patients is that they think their illness is inevitable. In most cases, it isn\u2019t inevitable at all. Simple lifestyle changes can have a drastic impact on the health of your heart and cardiovascular system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some ways you can prevent high blood pressure from putting you on my operating table.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improving Diet<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ifixhearts.com\/2021\/08\/29\/simple-rules-for-heart-healthy-eating\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cornerstone to good health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Unfortunately, there\u2019s a lot of confusion around what\u2019s truly healthy. Thanks to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ifixhearts.com\/2021\/07\/11\/how-the-food-pyramid-has-failed-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">misguided food pyramid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, fad diets, and companies trying to convince us that their powdered meal replacements are a good way to lose weight, it\u2019s hard to tell the difference between what\u2019s good for our hearts and what\u2019s just a marketing ploy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is that healthy eating is incredibly simple. Stick to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ifixhearts.com\/2023\/02\/what-it-means-to-eat-whole-real-food\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whole foods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 meat, vegetables, and unprocessed carbohydrates such as rice and sweet potatoes \u2013 and avoid anything made in a factory. I like to say you should only eat food that grows in the ground (like lettuce greens), or eats what grows in the ground (like cows).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you get your diet in check, you may notice your weight automatically starts to reach normal levels. Your sleep may get better, and your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ifixhearts.com\/2021\/06\/19\/what-is-metabolic-health-anyway\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metabolic health may improve<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which normalizes your blood pressure and helps you feel better in general.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reaching a healthy weight<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being overweight or obese has a huge impact on all areas of your health, blood pressure included. Losing as little as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ageuk.org.uk\/information-advice\/health-wellbeing\/conditions-illnesses\/7-ways-to-boost-your-heart-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5% of your body weight<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could significantly lower your risk of heart-related illness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being overweight also puts a lot of strain on your heart, making it work harder to pump blood. It also increases the likelihood of a plaque buildup in your arteries and can cause hormone imbalances in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ifixhearts.com\/2023\/01\/the-real-impact-of-alcohol-on-your-metabolic-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not a harmless substance. Drinking too much can cause a lot of problems for your health. Liver damage is a well-known side effect, but you should also know it can increase your blood pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smoking<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You probably know that tobacco products are bad for you. If you currently smoke, you may feel that it helps you to relax or calm you down when you\u2019re stressed. But nicotine is known to narrow your arteries and cause your heart to beat faster, which can raise your blood pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Factor in the damage that smoking causes to your blood vessels, and tobacco should be high on your list of things to avoid.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regular exercise improves your cardiovascular system, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ifixhearts.com\/2022\/03\/the-best-exercises-to-strengthen-your-heart\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strengthening your heart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This helps to improve your heart health in general and maintain your metabolic health as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take control of your blood pressure<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High blood pressure should tell you there\u2019s something wrong in your body. While it may be caused by illness or a long-term condition, it\u2019s far more likely that the solution is making different choices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In these instances, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ifixhearts.com\/2022\/10\/medications-arent-the-only-way-to-treat-chronic-disease\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taking medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to lower your blood pressure is a case of treating the symptom and ignoring the cause.
