Not a week goes by without someone telling me they\u2019re so confused they end up doing nothing, or that they believed they were making healthy decisions only to later find out they weren\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We live in a noisy world. That\u2019s beneficial at times, but it also makes it incredibly easy to get overwhelmed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The media tells you one thing on Monday and the opposite on Thursday. Your friends and family all gladly tell you \u201cthe best thing you can do is\u2026\u201d. And social media will have you trying every diet variation under the sun: veganism, carnivore, paleo, keto, low fat, or throwing out real food entirely and knocking back a powdered drink a couple of times a day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s impossible to get clarity with so much conflicting information coming at us every day. Instead, it\u2019s often better to have the conversation with a trained professional.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So if you want to increase heart health and stay fit and healthy for as long as possible, here are three questions that I recommend asking your cardiologist either in person or through an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/join-the-practice\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">online consultation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Can heart disease be prevented?<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In many, if not most, cases, the answer is yes &#8211; and you don\u2019t have to give up butter!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For years, saturated fat and high cholesterol have been blamed for heart attacks and heart disease. And when statins became available, many people simply stopped worrying about preventing heart disease because they could just take a pill and reduce their cholesterol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The truth is that focusing on cholesterol is a fool\u2019s errand. Many victims of heart disease do not have high cholesterol, and many people with high cholesterol never develop heart disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/09\/05\/you-can-prevent-heart-disease-heres-how\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart disease prevention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> begins with your lifestyle and improving your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/06\/19\/what-is-metabolic-health-anyway\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metabolic health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Eat real foods: things that grow in the ground or eat what grows in the ground. Avoid foods made in a factory &#8211; yes, even that box of cereal promising you that it\u2019s \u201cheart healthy\u201d (it isn\u2019t). This simple decision will help to reduce inflammation in your body, you\u2019ll feel more satisfied and not always hungry, and if you\u2019re overweight you\u2019ll find that your body naturally starts to shed the pounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise is also essential. Anything is better than nothing so don\u2019t obsess too much about the type of exercise, just do it regularly and have fun doing it. But if you want my recommendation, I\u2019m a fan of HIIT-style workouts and strength training.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are the symptoms of heart disease?<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your cardiologist should be able to answer this, and if their only answer is \u201chigh cholesterol\u201d then it\u2019s time to find a new one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/08\/08\/heart-disease-explained-all-you-need-to-know\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">multiple types of heart disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the symptoms can vary widely. Unlike something like the flu, which has very obvious symptoms, it\u2019s often very easy to overlook symptoms of heart disease because they can be mild or dismissed as something else:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swollen ankles and feet<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortness of breath<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fainting<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irregular heartbeat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chest Pain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have any of these, particularly on a recurring basis, it\u2019s worth visiting your cardiologist for a check-up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes there may not be any symptoms at all, which is why taking steps to reduce the risks in the first place is so important.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Are there tests to check my heart health?<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a couple of ways you could approach this. One option is to undergo the tests that diagnose heart disease, which can range from scans to blood tests that can show if you\u2019ve previously had a heart attack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This may not be necessary if you just want to see your current health levels though, in which case I recommend a blood panel to check your:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fasting glucose level<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Triglyceride:HDL cholesterol ratio<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin level<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are additional markers that can be observed from a blood test too, such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), which will indicate stress on the heart.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Improving heart health can be simple<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lifestyle is the single most powerful way to increase heart health. Of the top 10 causes of death in America, more than half are from metabolic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease, so it stands to reason that making lifestyle changes to enhance your metabolic health is the best thing you can do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can you do this?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start with a baseline assessment to find out how metabolically healthy you currently are. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/06\/20\/be-healthy-not-thin\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t assume that just because you\u2019re slim you are metabolically healthy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a baseline assessment completed, your steps to becoming healthier are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/07\/11\/how-the-food-pyramid-has-failed-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat an appropriate diet<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise regularly\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t smoke, and drink alcohol in moderation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can take up to a decade for poor metabolic health to show itself through disease, which means it\u2019s essential to take steps while you feel healthy &#8211; don\u2019t wait for illness to appear!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is that once you do start making changes, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/06\/25\/this-is-how-long-it-takes-to-improve-metabolic-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your health markers can improve quickly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
