There are many causes of stress that can be avoided or reduced, from lifestyle choices like smoking to behaviors like excess anger. But some sources of stress can\u2019t be avoided, and need to be managed instead.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work-related stress is one of the latter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myshortlister.com\/insights\/workplace-stress-statistics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than 50% of workers reported that work was a significant source of stress.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Implementing efforts to reduce stress can have a significant impact on the collective health of your team, contributing to a significant reduction in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/11\/15\/how-metabolic-health-coaching-reduces-employee-sick-da\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">employee sick days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well as the issue of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/p\/presenteeism.asp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">presenteeism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How stress affects the heart<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The body&#8217;s stress response, or \u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/staying-healthy\/understanding-the-stress-response\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fight-or-flight<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u2019 is your body&#8217;s method of preparing you for danger. In these moments, your body releases hormones intended to help you survive a dangerous situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This makes sense when we\u2019re truly in danger, or in the distant past at the start of our evolutionary journey. However, these moments of genuine mortal threat were not around-the-clock occurrences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem is that our stress response system hasn\u2019t caught up to the fact that many people live much safer lives now, and the events that trigger the response are not threats to our life at all. An imminent deadline or a job interview aren\u2019t at all similar to the stress of running for your life, but our response is the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worse, because these stressful moments are almost constant in modern life, we\u2019re also experiencing the stress responses much more often than we should. This is a problem because chronic stress can contribute to a number of conditions, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plaque buildup in the arteries<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety, depression, and addiction via chemical changes in the brain<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the link between everyday stress and heart disease isn\u2019t as well defined as acute and severe stress, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/heart-health\/stress-and-your-heart\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr Deepak Bhatt, the director of the Integrated Interventional Cardiovascular Program at Brigham and Women\u2019s Hospital, explains that<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cStress does cause some people to act in ways that increase their risk for heart disease.\u201d For example, turning to comfortable but unhealthy behaviors as a coping mechanism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such behaviors can include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unhealthy comfort foods<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smoking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drinking high levels of alcohol<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, the worst offenders for increasing the risk of heart disease!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Stress and workplace health<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poor workplace health has a huge impact on the productivity and profitability of a business. In 2019 alone, American businesses lost an astonishing amount of money &#8211; more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/09\/23\/how-to-promote-heart-health-in-the-workplace\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$500 billion dollars just in sick days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies have shown that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myshortlister.com\/insights\/workplace-stress-statistics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stress reduction training can reduce the cost of sick days by as much as 20%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and that\u2019s not including the cost of workers who are present in the office but unable to focus, and associated costs like insurance and medication prices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may look around your office and think the staff look healthy, but it\u2019s usually impossible to know if someone is truly healthy or not just by looking at them.
