{"id":14835,"date":"2022-02-06T03:07:03","date_gmt":"2022-02-06T03:07:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/?p=14835"},"modified":"2022-03-11T06:44:53","modified_gmt":"2022-03-11T06:44:53","slug":"are-vegetable-oils-healthy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/02\/06\/are-vegetable-oils-healthy\/","title":{"rendered":"Are vegetable oils healthy?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most important factors in establishing or maintaining <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/06\/19\/what-is-metabolic-health-anyway\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metabolic health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is to eat in a healthy way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the one hand this is simple, because eating in a heart healthy way is straightforward. But in reality, there\u2019s so much misinformation about nutrition that it can be difficult to filter out the noise and separate fact from fiction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This misinformation is particularly prevalent when it comes to fats and oils. Incredibly, possibly the most frequently promoted oils are vegetable oils &#8211; which, ironically, are among the least healthy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cooking with vegetable oils will not help with heart disease prevention, in fact it will have the opposite effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What are vegetable oils?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vegetables have a strong reputation as being healthy, so it stands to reason that their oils should be too. Unfortunately, the term \u2018vegetable oils\u2019 is little more than a clever marketing technique.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They may (or may not) begin with vegetables, but they then go through such a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/draxe.com\/nutrition\/vegetable-oil\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">large number of extensive chemical and mechanical processes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that by the end they bear no similarity to the vegetables or seeds they once were.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve been following my blog for a while then you already know my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/08\/29\/simple-rules-for-heart-healthy-eating\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">golden rule for heart healthy eating<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that people should eat things that grow in the ground or which eat things that grow in the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heavily refined and processed oils do not fit within this rule!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vegetable oils are often <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thankyourbody.com\/vegetable-oils\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">advertised as healthy because they contain Omega 3 and are lacking in saturated fats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But as is often the case with advertising, this is not everything you need to know about the product. There are two other elements that vegetable oils are high in:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Omega 6<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trans-fatty acids<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And these can cause issues if you\u2019re focused on heart disease prevention.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The problems with Omega 6<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Omega 6 is necessary for our health, so consuming it is certainly not a bad thing. But the importance is in maintaining a healthy balance of omega 3 and 6. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.doctorsbeyondmedicine.com\/listing\/the-dangers-of-omega-6#:~:text=The%20Dangers%20of%20Omega-6%201%20Omega-6%20Blocks%20Omega-3,4%20The%20omega-3%20conclusion.%20The%20truth%20is%20that\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The recommendation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a ratio of 1:4 of omega 3:6 &#8211; but the typical American diet is so unhealthy that we\u2019re consuming up to 25 times more omega 6 than 3!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So the problem is not omega 6 itself, but the quantities in which it\u2019s being consumed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the roles omega 6 plays in our bodies is promoting inflammation. That\u2019s also a necessary function, as inflammation plays an important part in healing. However, an excess of inflammation is also a contributing factor to many chronic illnesses, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obesity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cancer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inflammation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autoimmune illnesses<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With vegetable oils being used in almost every type of pre-packaged food imaginable, it\u2019s easy to see why we\u2019re consuming so much of it &#8211; and why any attempts to improve metabolic health or prevent heart disease should focus on balancing the omega 3:6 ratio.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The dangers of artificial trans-fats<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/01\/23\/telling-the-difference-between-good-and-bad-fats-in-your-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Artificial trans fats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are used as a preservative and flavor enhancer in a wide range of food products, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bread<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cakes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pastries<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ice creams<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast food<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cereals<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are also prevalent in vegetable oils.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And this gets to the root of the problem that we face today: our pre-made foods are made with unhealthy ingredients, making it literally impossible to eat a heart healthy diet without eliminating so many of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commercials will tell us that cereals are fortified with vitamins and certified as protective against heart disease, while simultaneously created with trans fats (and other ingredients) that work against our health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can test this prevalence for yourself. Take a look in your pantry and refrigerator and look at the list of ingredients for your items. You\u2019ll probably be surprised at just how many foods you have that contain some form of vegetable oil, from salad dressing to microwave meals.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What oils should you eat and cook with?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As is usually the case, the problem with vegetable oils is that they\u2019re the result of heavy processing. The healthiest fats to consume are those that have had as little processing as possible: lard, butter, tallow, olive and coconut oil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When choosing olive oil, it\u2019s important to do a little research into the brand first as it\u2019s been found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drhardick.com\/fake-olive-oil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">80% of olive oil sold in the USA is not as described<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, being cut with cheaper vegetable oils.
