Decisions like eating foods that contribute to weight gain, or not moving as much as you should.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The point I\u2019m making is that change doesn\u2019t happen immediately, it happens over time as a result of the decisions we make.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So if you now want to lose weight and focus on improving your heart health, the answer isn\u2019t to take drastic measures. You don\u2019t need to lose huge chunks of time to do it. You don\u2019t need to rely on motivation. And you certainly don\u2019t need to live unhappily because of the changes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key to losing weight, getting fit, and increasing your cardiovascular health is as simple as making the right decisions each day, and letting time take care of the rest.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Daily actions to increase heart health<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s take a closer look at what those decisions are:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What you eat<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the big one, and where most of your focus needs to be. As important as other lifestyle factors are, the truth is it\u2019s not possible to out-train a bad diet. Even with nothing else, a healthy diet will still help you to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/06\/19\/what-is-metabolic-health-anyway\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metabolically healthy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, improve your mental clarity, keep your arteries clean, and generally help you to feel good. On the other hand, if you do everything else right but have a poor diet, it\u2019ll be like swimming upstream.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many people, the first step in working out how to eat a healthy diet means visiting the food pyramid. Unfortunately, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/07\/11\/how-the-food-pyramid-has-failed-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the food pyramid has failed us<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and turning to it for advice can make your problem even worse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/06\/28\/being-healthy-is-harder-than-influencers-suggest\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can\u2019t rely on influencers to tell us what\u2019s healthy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which includes celebrity chefs endorsing \u201cheart-healthy\u201d cereals. While it may be true that their endorsed products help to lower cholesterol, that doesn\u2019t mean they aren\u2019t causing other problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you start thinking about rules for eating, it\u2019s easy to feel stressed and overwhelmed. But in reality, following <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/08\/29\/simple-rules-for-heart-healthy-eating\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">simple rules for heart-healthy eating <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is all it takes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First of all, eliminate as much processed food from your diet as possible. Straight away you\u2019ll remove a lot of sugar and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/02\/06\/are-vegetable-oils-healthy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unhealthy vegetable oils<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both of which will drastically improve your health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My general principle is to eat either things that grow in the ground, or which eat the things that grow in the ground. That means animal products, fruits, vegetables, seeds, as well as potatoes and sweet potatoes. It excludes Oreos and Fritos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That leads onto the next recommendation: avoid foods that come in a box or bag. This is a general guideline &#8211; your vegetables or meat may be purchased in a bag, and that\u2019s okay. This is more about a principle of avoiding foods that come from a factory or have a list of ingredients stamped on the packaging.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, prepare your meals at home as much as possible. This way, you\u2019ll be in full control over the ingredients as well as the calories. You\u2019ll know that there aren\u2019t hidden ingredients, like the food being cooked in vegetable oils.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How you move<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/09\/05\/you-can-prevent-heart-disease-heres-how\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preventing heart disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is important to you, then <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/03\/20\/the-best-exercises-to-strengthen-your-heart\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exercise needs to be a priority<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is an area that causes a lot of confusion though, with many people thinking they need to spend countless hours performing cardio. It\u2019s not true, and as with food, following some simple guidelines will give you amazing results.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The very best thing you can do is incorporate what I call \u201cconstant movement.\u201d This means to use your body wherever possible:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Instead of taking the elevator, walk up the stairs<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Use a standing desk instead of sitting all day<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Walk instead of driving, where possible<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will burn some extra calories but most importantly it will help to strengthen your muscles and increase bone density.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resistance training is also very important. If you want to stay at home, you can incorporate bodyweight exercises into your day, like push-ups, squats, pull-ups, and sit-ups. You can also follow a basic dumbbell routine or join a gym if you want to challenge yourself further.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, cardiovascular training is beneficial too. You don\u2019t need to jog for hours though. My personal favorite is high intensity interval training (HIIT) a few times a week, as it\u2019s highly effective and doesn\u2019t take much time. Alternatively, take long and leisurely walks that get your heart rate into zone 2.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Stress<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With diet and exercise addressed, it\u2019s time to look at lifestyle factors. Stress is widely known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/03\/07\/can-stress-increase-your-risk-of-developing-heart-disease\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increasing the risk of developing heart disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, although some of the reasons are often overlooked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most recognized impact of stress is that it triggers our fight or flight response, releasing hormones and raising blood pressure. None of this is problematic in the short term, but it can become a threat to our health if it\u2019s frequent &#8211; as it so often is in modern society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress also has a secondary role in increasing the risk of heart disease: the coping mechanisms we turn to. \u201cComfort eating\u201d is one example, but binge drinking, smoking, overworking, and spending hours on the couch are also all popular behaviors for coping with stress. And, as we all know, they all can increase the risk of heart disease too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best way to combat this is to reduce your exposure to stress where possible, and find healthier coping mechanisms to avoid feeling overwhelmed. But no, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/01\/02\/do-you-need-a-stress-test\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you don\u2019t need a stress test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to find out if you\u2019re at risk of heart disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>To sum up<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This article isn\u2019t an exhaustive list of things you can to prevent heart disease &#8211; smoking and heavy drinking haven\u2019t been mentioned, for example.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, this is a look at the \u201cbig wins\u201d you can focus on. They\u2019re the areas that have the biggest impact on your health, and avoid you majoring in the minor leagues, as the saying goes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of all, I want you to see that becoming healthy doesn\u2019t have to take over your life. It\u2019s a simple matter of taking the right steps, which will <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enhance <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t need special equipment or expensive clothes.
