{"id":16251,"date":"2022-05-09T18:43:52","date_gmt":"2022-05-09T18:43:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/?p=16251"},"modified":"2022-05-09T19:17:04","modified_gmt":"2022-05-09T19:17:04","slug":"what-are-the-easiest-ways-to-improve-metabolic-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/05\/09\/what-are-the-easiest-ways-to-improve-metabolic-health\/","title":{"rendered":"What are the easiest ways to improve metabolic health?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remarkably, it\u2019s possible for someone to go their entire life without ever hearing the phrase \u201cmetabolic health.\u201d So first of all, if you\u2019ve heard of it but need some help understanding and improving it, you\u2019re still in a much better position than a lot of other people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s start with a definition, and you can find out more about metabolic health, what it is, and how to track it in my article \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/06\/19\/what-is-metabolic-health-anyway\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is metabolic health anyway?<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d As I wrote in that piece, \u201cmetabolic health is the body\u2019s ability to utilize what we eat to perform vital functions like repair our cells, provide adequate energy, and protect us from chronic diseases including heart disease and diabetes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are five specific markers for metabolic health, so rather than being based on how you feel, test results will make it clear whether you are metabolically healthy or not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The five markers are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waist circumference<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Body fat percentage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin level<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fasting glucose level<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cholesterol (triglyceride:HDL ratio)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to improve your metabolic health, you need to find out your existing numbers for the above. And, yes, it does mean that if you\u2019re overweight, you aren\u2019t metabolically healthy. With the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/obesity\/data\/adult.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USA\u2019s obesity prevalence sitting above 40%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s no wonder that only 12% of adults are metabolically healthy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How long does it take to improve metabolic health?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improving your metabolic health is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/06\/25\/this-is-how-long-it-takes-to-improve-metabolic-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a lot quicker than many people expect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With my patients, we often see significant improvements in 90 days, although studies also show improvements within just one month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to be realistic though. If you\u2019ve got decades of health-destroying behaviors behind you, it\u2019s going to take some time to correct that. But you can see positive changes very quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What are the benefits to improving metabolic health?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By improving your metabolic health, you increase your life expectancy and significantly reduce your chances of suffering illness including heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. Considering that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/08\/08\/heart-disease-explained-all-you-need-to-know\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart disease remains the number one killer in the USA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, claiming one in every four deaths, reducing your chances of getting it is a major benefit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it\u2019s not the only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/07\/25\/how-improving-your-metabolic-health-will-improve-other-areas\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benefit to improving your metabolic health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To become metabolically healthy, you\u2019ll need to reach a healthy weight. You\u2019ll also have improved hormone levels, which in turn leads to more energy, better sleep, and fewer mood swings. If you suffer from \u2018brain fog\u2019 then you\u2019ll also notice an improvement in mental clarity, and the common afternoon slump will be a thing of the past.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Are there short-term solutions to fix metabolic health?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no pill that will make you metabolically healthy. You have to earn it through your lifestyle. Put another way, metabolic health isn\u2019t something you achieve and then enjoy forever &#8211; it requires you to consistently make the right choices, particularly around your food intake, exercise, and sleep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So the answer is \u201cno,\u201d there aren\u2019t short-term solutions.
