And when it comes to the food we eat and the diets we follow, blind trust can be a dangerous thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/07\/11\/how-the-food-pyramid-has-failed-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">food pyramid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a great example of this. Not only are<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksl.com\/article\/50332891\/88-of-americans-are-metabolically-unhealthy-says-utah-scientist-heres-what-to-do-about-it\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">88% of Americans metabolically unhealthy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but their recommended diet is failing their bodies and their hearts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This isn&#8217;t my only reservation about<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/12\/05\/how-the-ahas-2021-dietary-guidelines-continue-to-fail-us\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">modern dietary guidelines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. New research finds that 2021 Dietary Guidelines of Americans advisory committee (DGA) is almost<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/public-health-nutrition\/article\/conflicts-of-interest-for-members-of-the-us-2020-dietary-guidelines-advisory-committee\/843992D8901540296BCEB43D716C1497\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">completely inundated with conflicts of interest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to the tune of<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 95% of the entire board<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And if that doesn&#8217;t give you pause, their non-disclosure will. The DGA has not once disclosed its conflicts of interest in a public setting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let&#8217;s take a look at the evidence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>COI in the DGA<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28464165\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conflicts of interest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (COI) are rampant in the food industry. It&#8217;s no question that vested interests have a measurable impact on our dietary guidelines, and quite possibly the quality of our dietary guidance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And to see COI in such a high concentration within DGA is disheartening, to say the least.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March 2022, researchers performed background research on the 20 members of DGA to determine the extent of their COIs and evaluate their impact on research funding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The results were staggering:<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/public-health-nutrition\/article\/conflicts-of-interest-for-members-of-the-us-2020-dietary-guidelines-advisory-committee\/843992D8901540296BCEB43D716C1497\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">95% of the board<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was compromised with vested interests. Many board members were associated with industry giants such as Kellogg\u2019s, General Mills, Dannon, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It gets worse. Roughly 60% of the documented COI was related to research funding or membership on a board. Most if not all of the 20 participants had a direct financial tie to the food industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re starting to see the dirt under the rug. Not only are these COI practices completely unethical from a scientific perspective, but they completely negate the DGA&#8217;s purpose: to provide Americans with unbiased, science-based nutritional advice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I believe I speak for everyone when I say dietary guidelines should and must be comprised of objective science. But with such a significant lack of transparency, objectivity, and unbiased reasoning, it&#8217;s extremely difficult to trust the validity of DGA&#8217;s advice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can\u2019t believe everything you read \u2014 even from so-called experts. And when it comes to the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/03\/13\/the-real-cost-of-cheap-food\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">food you eat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the diet you uphold, you must think critically and do your own research.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>So what guidelines do we follow?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conflicts of interest have an enormous impact on the guidelines surrounding the Standard American Diet (SAD). And with so much uncertainty, our circumstances beg the question: what do we do now?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I firmly believe the guidelines of our diets should be grounded in legitimized, ethical research. The rules we follow must be as whole and as real as the foods we eat, and come from an unbiased place of academic study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From my time in the medical field, I&#8217;ve followed several rules of thumb backed by credible research.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/11\/28\/forget-superfoods-here-are-the-top-3-foods-to-eliminate-to-improve-your-heart-health\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whole, real foods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This means anything that comes from the ground or is raised on the ground \u2014 and no hyper-processed &#8216;near food&#8217; objects. Evidence suggests that eating whole, real foods over a 16-week period may result in weight loss,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/08901171221116066\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased energy values<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and confidence<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/08\/21\/how-cardiovascular-training-can-increase-your-lifespan\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">surrounding health and wellness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoiding refined grains. Although conventional guidance may tell you otherwise, consuming high volumes of white rice and flour can<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fnut.2022.887757\/full\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">significantly increase weight<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, blood sugar, and your albumin and triglycerides levels. Additionally, diets that are high in processed foods have a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6723973\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30% higher all-cause mortality rate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Make grains a nonexistent part of your diet, and seek alternatives that provide more protein and higher fiber.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consuming animal protein. Plant-based alternatives have their benefits, but studies show meat is considerably<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34849845\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more effective than legumes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and nuts for reducing all-cause mortality. Chicken, fish, beef, and pork all have a place in the modern diet, and unless you have<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/07\/31\/how-to-eat-metabolically-healthy-with-5-different-popular-diets\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">special dietary restrictions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you should be consuming these on a regular basis.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep in mind that this is just a starting place for research-driven, heart healthy diets. As you embark on your own<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/07\/10\/how-can-i-learn-more-about-metabolic-health\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metabolic health journey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I encourage you to take a closer look at the DGA and the food industry as a whole.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Where we go from here<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conflict of the Standard American Diet is old hat. But as increasing evidence sheds light on its continual failure, it&#8217;s time we stopped following the advice of those with vested interests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we want to take our diets back into our own hands, we need to be more critical of the foods we eat, the diets we follow, and the advice we choose to believe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This includes being wary of guidelines created by those with something to gain, evaluating our sources from a critical perspective, and looking to science rather than hearsay to make decisions about our diets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only then can we hope to create a food system that is healthy, sustainable, and free from the stranglehold of Big Food.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&#8217;re interested in learning more about science-based diets, you&#8217;re welcome to check out my book,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/books\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay Off My Operating Table<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
