But as we get lost in a sea of green smoothies and viral wellness trends, we find ourselves neglecting a critical component of wellness:<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/06\/19\/how-important-is-metabolic-health-and-why-havent-i-heard-of-it\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metabolic health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/617911\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">71% of Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> say they are in excellent health. However,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unc.edu\/posts\/2018\/11\/28\/only-12-percent-of-american-adults-are-metabolically-healthy-carolina-study-finds\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just 12% of the population<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is actually metabolically healthy \u2014 a disturbing statistic and a worrying insight that most people don\u2019t even know they\u2019re unhealthy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The truth is that<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/04\/18\/the-difference-between-health-and-metabolic-health\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health and metabolic health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are not the same thing. While health is the &#8216;umbrella&#8217; that refers to your condition, metabolic health is the &#8216;handle&#8217; that holds it all together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don&#8217;t usually notice our metabolics until our health goes south. When things get out of sorts, the results can be life altering \u2014 and not in a good way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the sooner you understand why, the sooner you can do something about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is metabolic health?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You&#8217;re familiar with metabolism to at least some degree. You know it has something to do with weight and can possibly impact your health, but you&#8217;re probably unsure about how it applies to your overall wellness \u2014 yet another<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/09\/18\/conflicts-of-interest-are-shaping-our-diet\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">failing of the American health system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a nutshell, metabolic health is a measure of how well your body processes and uses energy. It tracks how well your body uses food to nourish its cells, and how efficiently it stores said energy for future use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, metabolic health is a measure of how well your body converts the food you eat into the energy it needs to function.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are five key indicators of metabolic health:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Central obesity (waist circumference)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood sugar levels<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/06\/10\/i-have-been-diagnosed-with-high-blood-pressure-what-should-i-do\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HDL Cholesterol levels<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Triglyceride levels<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A healthy metabolism encourages you to partake in the things you love, all while functioning optimally both physically and mentally. It gives you the energy you need to live an active lifestyle and assists your vital organs with daily functions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, this is the exception rather than the rule for the average American. If any one of your metabolic health factors becomes abnormal, you may start to notice a sharp downturn in certain areas of your health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And before long, this snowball effect will impact virtually every aspect of your wellbeing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why metabolic health matters<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metabolic health isn&#8217;t just a piece of the wellness puzzle. Instead, it&#8217;s a pillar of wellbeing that empowers all other aspects of our health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This isn&#8217;t dramatics. Researchers increasingly find correlations between lagging metabolisms and physical health, mental clarity, and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/08\/14\/managing-stress-in-a-cost-of-living-crisis\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emotional stress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 none of which can be fixed by green smoothies or the latest wellness fad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, poor metabolics can significantly increase your weight and body fat, and heighten your risks for diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metabolic health also affects intelligence, memory, and mental awareness. Studies have found correlations between people with<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7019689\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metabolic syndrome and cognitive decline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, eventually leading to dementia, schizophrenia, and other serious illnesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The metabolism also plays a role in our<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/07\/17\/metabolic-health-mental-health-and-addiction\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. People with metabolic syndrome are more likely to experience<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2584197\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety and depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and have a harder time bouncing back from<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/09\/12\/how-managing-workplace-stress-hurts-your-heart\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stress at work<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that isn\u2019t the biggest reason your metabolics are so important.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ll be blunt: your metabolic health matters because it&#8217;s the cornerstone of your longevity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies consistently point toward an<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/pressroom\/nchs_press_releases\/2022\/20220831.htm\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alarming drop in longevity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 with dyslipidemia, diabetes, and heart disease claiming millions of lives each year.
