You&#8217;ve already been lectured up and down about exercising more and eating right.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, I want you to look at the state of your health right now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because frankly, cardiovascular disease doesn&#8217;t provide the luxury of time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Particularly if you know that you\u2019re not in the best health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I want you to know that there is a light at the end of this tunnel. You&#8217;re not too far gone. There is hope. Heart disease isn&#8217;t inevitable, even at your current state of health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And even the smallest changes can yield dramatic results.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Preventing heart disease with 5 lifestyle changes<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there are many genetic, environmental, and unobservable factors that contribute to heart disease, there are also many elements that are within our control.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, many<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/09\/04\/the-signs-of-an-unhealthy-heart\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cardiovascular illnesses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be negated by a few lifestyle modifications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s start with the basics:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Lower blood pressure<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reducing your blood pressure will have an enormous impact on your overall health. The optimal level is below 120\/80 mmHg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, ambiguous statements like \u2018lower your blood pressure\u2019 are one of the reasons that many people aren\u2019t taking control of their health &#8211; the instruction offers no insight on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to lower blood pressure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is that it\u2019s possible to lower your blood pressure without medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I recommend leaning on lifestyle changes to complete the bulk of the work. Exercise more, eat better, and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/03\/07\/can-stress-increase-your-risk-of-developing-heart-disease\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manage stress effectively<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember:<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/06\/10\/i-have-been-diagnosed-with-high-blood-pressure-what-should-i-do\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypertension<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> isn&#8217;t always a permanent fixture of health. However, it will take time to see results and bring your metrics within an optimal range.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Stop smoking<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to ensure a healthy future free of heart disease, you need to start with the basics \u2014 dropping your smoking habit. This is probably the fastest way to manage hypertension, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies show that smokers have an increased risk for serious cardiovascular illnesses, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/tobacco\/data_statistics\/sgr\/50th-anniversary\/pdfs\/fs_smoking_CVD_508.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coronary heart disease<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic hypertension<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasheart.org\/heart-health\/heart-information-center\/topics\/smoking-and-your-heart\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tightening of the arteries<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22779085\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obstructive pulmonary disease<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/tobacco\/campaign\/tips\/diseases\/heart-disease-stroke.html#:~:text=Secondhand%20smoke%20increases%20the%20risk,of%20having%20a%20heart%20attack.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased risk of stroke<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The catastrophic effects of these illnesses speak for themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter how &#8216;relaxing&#8217; it may feel at the time, smoking simply isn&#8217;t worth the risk. If you&#8217;ve tried to quit in the past and found yourself struggling to stay on track, connect with a coach or support group in your area.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Increase exercise<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&#8217;re serious about protecting your heart, you need to get serious about<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/03\/20\/the-best-exercises-to-strengthen-your-heart\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">regular exercise<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The effort is worth the outcome \u2014 just 30 minutes of intentional movement can dramatically improve your metabolic health markers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And good news: exercise compounds throughout the day, so you don&#8217;t need to set aside an hour for weightlifting or spend a full 60 minutes in the gym to see results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, you could:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perform 10 minutes of HIIT<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take a brisk walk after lunch<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go on a short weekend hike<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find movement you love, then stick to a regimen. Who knows, you may even come to love it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Have a heart healthy diet<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/07\/31\/how-to-eat-metabolically-healthy-with-5-different-popular-diets\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart healthy diets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> come from whole, real foods that come from the ground or live on the ground i.e. animal products, fruit, vegetables, nuts. Not Oreos and Dorito\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what is a heart healthy diet <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? It&#8217;s not our<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/09\/18\/conflicts-of-interest-are-shaping-our-diet\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">incredibly flawed food pyramid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that\u2019s for sure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research suggests:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animal protein<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leafy greens<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starchy vegetables<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plenty of water<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I follow a simple rule of thumb: if I can&#8217;t name where it came from or what the ingredients are, I <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/03\/13\/the-real-cost-of-cheap-food\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shouldn&#8217;t be eating it<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Reduce alcohol consumption<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There&#8217;s an exceptional amount of research on either side of the drinking debate. But if you want my honest opinion after decades as a heart surgeon, increased<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/07\/17\/metabolic-health-mental-health-and-addiction\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol consumption will not do you any favors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased intake of alcohol is associated with:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5513687\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High blood pressure<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/CIRCGEN.119.002814\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atrial fibrillation<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2365733\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart failure<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This doesn\u2019t mean you should clear your cabinets of every beer and vintage, but you should be mindful of how much is consumed.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2022\/03\/alcohol-may-not-benefit-the-heart-researchers-say\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Light to moderate drinkers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have the lowest correlation to heart disease, while heavy drinkers sit at the highest risk bracket.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Preventing heart disease with metabolic health<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/03\/27\/daily-habits-to-maintain-a-healthy-heart\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improving heart health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is relatively straightforward. However, it can feel challenging to make lasting improvements without the support of an expert.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&#8217;re looking for a single source of truth to encourage your progress, I highly recommend metabolic health coaching.
