You&#8217;re probably wondering where to get started with maintenance and management, or what the rest of your life will look like.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But you don&#8217;t just have to manage type 2 diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, you can cure it completely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It starts with your<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/07\/24\/the-7-principles-of-metabolic-health\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metabolic health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Understanding type 2 diabetes<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes is largely preventable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas is unable to make any insulin. Genetic factors and autoimmune reactions are the most likely causes, and patients are required to take insulin in order to manage blood sugar effectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes is another matter. The pancreas does produce insulin \u2014 just not enough to control current blood sugar levels. Cells become resistant to the insulin hormone over time, bathing the bloodstream in sugar and progressing into chronic disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This doesn&#8217;t happen overnight. In fact, it can take years for diabetes to manifest completely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The progression is a vicious cycle:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we eat carbohydrates,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/03\/13\/the-real-cost-of-cheap-food\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">processed foods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/01\/23\/telling-the-difference-between-good-and-bad-fats-in-your-diet\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fake oils from vegetables and seeds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, our body creates more insulin to handle the elevated sugars.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin directs this excess sugar to different locations around the body, commonly stored in fat cells around the arms, legs, and belly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When blood sugar levels reach extreme highs, fat begins to build up in areas where it shouldn&#8217;t occur \u2014 namely the liver and pancreas. The only way this can be seen is through an MRI.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fat building up in the pancreas begins an inflammation process within organs including the heart and liver. This ultimately damages the cells of the pancreas that generate insulin, reducing output, limiting cell responsiveness, and deregulating blood sugar.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What many people don&#8217;t realize is that type 2 diabetes can eventually lead to type 1, sometimes called LADA or type 1.5 diabetes. Cells that should respond to insulin no longer have the capacity to do so. And as more sugar adds more fat to the pancreas, insulin production falls dramatically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes is a disturbing wake-up call about the lifestyle you\u2019ve adopted. It&#8217;s also a disease that can be reversed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How improved metabolic health reverses type 2 diabetes<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common treatment for type 1 diabetes is injectable insulin. While it may be effective in that specific use case, millions of patients with type 2 diabetes are also put onto insulin therapy as a first line of defense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this is largely a part of the problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of managing root causes, we are treating symptoms (high blood sugar) with band-aids (more insulin). This does not address sugar management, which is largely dietary in nature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given that injectable insulin is for the most part an ineffective and flawed strategy for healing, we are left with an alternative:<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/09\/25\/why-does-metabolic-health-matter\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improved metabolic health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Science tells us that the best way to resolve type 2 diabetes is to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00125-011-2204-7?correlationId=4d9ea02c-da9a-44df-a279-bfae59b39531&amp;error=cookies_not_supported&amp;code=0aeb9909-283c-4944-9fd9-31417b7dac78\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stop consuming processed food<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, before insulin was synthesized, the primary treatment for diabetes was a low sugar diet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This causes the progression of diabetes to happen in reverse:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you stop eating processed foods, sugar, and heavy carbohydrates, sugar in your blood falls to appropriate levels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inflammatory responses are reduced, allowing cells to respond to the insulin hormone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fat around the pancreas and liver dissipates as the body requires fewer storage areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2213858719300762\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extremely accurate data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showing the reversal of type 2 diabetes from improved metabolic health. Research indicates carbohydrate reduction and metabolically healthy diets encourage measurable blood sugar changes in two to three weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For best results, your primary treatment for type 2 diabetes should consist of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/04\/24\/the-effect-of-keto-diets-on-metabolic-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduced intake of carbohydrates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially processed foods.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/08\/21\/how-cardiovascular-training-can-increase-your-lifespan\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased exercise intensity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to burn excess sugar in the blood.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A regulated diet of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/11\/28\/forget-superfoods-here-are-the-top-3-foods-to-eliminate-to-improve-your-heart-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whole, real foods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and low glycemic meals.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supplements, better sleep, and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/04\/24\/the-effect-of-keto-diets-on-metabolic-health\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">special diets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be helpful here, but they are not required to successfully reverse type 2 diabetes.
