{"id":17671,"date":"2022-10-16T16:30:22","date_gmt":"2022-10-16T16:30:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/?p=17671"},"modified":"2022-10-16T16:30:22","modified_gmt":"2022-10-16T16:30:22","slug":"how-to-measure-your-metabolic-health-at-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/10\/16\/how-to-measure-your-metabolic-health-at-home\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Measure Your Metabolic Health at Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Americans are more metabolically unhealthy now than at any other point in history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2018\/11\/181128115045.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nine in ten<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have at least one metabolic factor out of balance \u2014 encouraging the development of strokes, heart attacks, and life-changing diseases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worse still, most don&#8217;t even know it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is, measuring your metabolic health is extremely straightforward. You don&#8217;t have to order expensive tests, you won\u2019t necessarily need special equipment, and you don&#8217;t need to book a doctor&#8217;s appointment to get started.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, you can take a measurement of your metabolic health right from your own home.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The 5 measurements of metabolic health<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone needs to know their metabolic metrics \u2014 regardless of how healthy they feel. If just one number sits outside normal range, your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/09\/04\/the-signs-of-an-unhealthy-heart\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk factors for chronic disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be abnormally high.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are five basic factors to consider.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Waist circumference<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waist circumference is the first measurement of metabolic wellness. This isn&#8217;t calculated from a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/09\/18\/conflicts-of-interest-are-shaping-our-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">body fat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> percentage, or discernible from a BMI calculator. Instead, you\u2019ll need to physically measure the amount of visceral fat in your midsection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best way to do this is to wrap a tape measure just above your belly button. If you can&#8217;t find a tape measure that bends freely, you can measure a four-foot piece of string to use instead. Just remeasure the string against the tape to get an accurate result.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll want to measure your waist circumference first thing in the morning, and always before you eat, drink, or become bloated over the course of the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are a man, your waist circumference should be less than 40 inches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are a woman, your waist circumference should be less than 35 inches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep in mind that these are standardized measurements that don&#8217;t account for height variance. If you are much taller or much shorter than the average adult, you may need to measure against customized metrics.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Blood pressure<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/06\/10\/i-have-been-diagnosed-with-high-blood-pressure-what-should-i-do\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is perhaps the easiest metabolic factor to measure at home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can use a device to test at your leisure, or go to any grocery store or pharmacy to use their freestanding machine. Plus, your primary care provider likely takes your blood pressure every time you visit, so you may have a past record of metrics to peruse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the average adult, blood pressure readings should be less than 130\/85. Both numbers must be in range, and should always be measured without the use of antihypertensives \u2014 medications that lower your blood pressure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve already been diagnosed with high blood pressure and prescribed diuretics, you can assume that your numbers are metabolically unhealthy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Blood sugar<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood testing can tell you a great deal about the state of your metabolic health. Since most of our metabolic wellness is tied to sugar in the bloodstream, this is where we&#8217;ll start our measurements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fasting blood glucose is the amount of sugar in your blood when you haven&#8217;t eaten for 8 to 12 hours. You can order a panel through your local doctor&#8217;s office, or use a fingerstick test at home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your fasting blood glucose should be less than 100 milligrams per deciliter, or 5.5 millimoles per liter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, this number should be measured without the help of medication. If you have been diagnosed with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/10\/09\/metabolic-health-and-type-2-diabetes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and given insulin to control your blood sugar, you may already be experiencing the symptoms of metabolic instability.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Triglycerides<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last two measurements of your metabolic health are related to blood lipids. Also known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/01\/23\/telling-the-difference-between-good-and-bad-fats-in-your-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neutral fats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, these lipids support a properly functioning metabolism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Triglycerides in particular are a type of lipid used to store energy in the body. Excess triglycerides are stored as fat, which can eventually trigger inflammation and plaque buildup over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can purchase a blood lipid panel from your local diagnostics center, or buy an over-the-counter test for around $20.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Either way, your triglyceride measurement should be less than 150 milligrams per deciliter. Anything higher, and you may have a potential imbalance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. HDL cholesterol<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HDL cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein) is the second measurement on your blood lipid panel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nicknamed &#8216;good cholesterol,&#8217; your HDL should be much higher than your LDL (low-density lipoprotein), as it reduces unwanted cholesterol and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/05\/09\/what-are-the-easiest-ways-to-improve-metabolic-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lowers your risks for heart disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are a man, your HDL cholesterol should be over 40 milligrams per deciliter. If you are a woman, it should be over 50 milligrams per deciliter.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How to address your metabolic health metrics<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Measuring your metabolic health is just the beginning of your wellness journey.
