We only \u2018earned\u2019 a single cookie or a bag of chips after all that effort, and usually throw up our hands in defeat on the way out the door.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;Calories in, calories out&#8217; (CICO) is an overwhelmingly pervasive myth in our society. After all the years we\u2019ve spent collectively \u2018burning off&#8217; calories, both our weight and our health has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/10\/02\/5-steps-to-prevent-heart-disease\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moved in the wrong direction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is something clearly wrong here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight loss misconceptions like CICO are not serving Americans well. And yet, it remains an embedded part of our cultural consciousness that prevents us from achieving true <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/10\/16\/how-to-measure-your-metabolic-health-at-home\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metabolic health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why? Because it seems so simple.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Debunking the exercise + CICO myth<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We&#8217;ll start with a definition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The &#8216;calories in, calories out&#8217; model says you can lose weight by exercising your way into a deficit. For example, you could eat 2,000 maintenance calories and burn 500 calories to create a 25% deficit. Doing this for a week adds up to 3,500 calories, which is the most common number thrown around for a pound of human fat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the &#8216;calories in, calories out&#8217; model of eating and exercise is not the best way to lose weight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are some obvious flaws:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&#8217;re focused on eating fewer calories rather than nutritional calories, you&#8217;re bound to miss key nutrients and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/07\/24\/the-7-principles-of-metabolic-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">starve your body<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of vitamins and minerals.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CICO does not address eating times or frequencies. Even if you\u2019re limiting your caloric values, eating without rest periods or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2022\/10\/221021163559.htm#:~:text=Northwestern%20Medicine%20scientists%20have%20uncovered,rhythms%20and%20change%20fat%20tissue.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">right before bed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may not contribute to fat loss.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardio may &#8216;burn&#8217; more calories, but it may not result in sustainable weight loss. You&#8217;re likely just <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3544497\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">making yourself hungrier<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which encourages you to eat back your burned calories \u2014 and then some.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CICO numbers rarely translate into the real world. The moniker of &#8216;3,500 calories equals a pound&#8217; is<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aicr.org\/news\/the-3500-calorie-weight-loss-myth\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just a rule of thumb<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that has been challenged by better science over the years.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The list goes on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But putting these points aside for a second, we must understand that the idea of &#8216;burning off&#8217; all calories is flawed at its core.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies show that people who exercise more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5556592\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do not have a clear relationship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to weight loss. When you isolate cardiovascular exercise from other weight loss tactics, there is little to no correlation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can understand why this is from a conceptual standpoint. In order to burn off all excess calories, we would need to spend all day in the gym and consume practically nothing. However, some of the world&#8217;s largest bodybuilders only train for<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bodybuilding.com\/content\/how-frequently-and-how-long-should-you-train.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one to two hours per day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 and eat well over their maintenance calories to build muscle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I want to be clear: I&#8217;m not saying that exercise has no benefit to our health. Nor am I saying that calories don\u2019t have an impact on weight. What I\u2019m saying is that trying to manipulate your calories and energy expenditure isn\u2019t the best way to manage your weight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you know that the FDA allows food labels to state calories as being 20% under what the product contains? That\u2019s a huge number &#8211; if you were trying to eat 2,000 calories a day and accidentally consumed 20% more, you\u2019d eat an extra 400 calories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then to make matters worse, exercise burns a surprisingly small amount of calories. That gym session might feel like it should have used 700 calories, but realistically you\u2019ll be lucky to reach 200.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compounding the problem further is the notorious inaccuracy of the calories on your fitness tracker. You\u2019ve got potentially inaccurate calorie numbers on your food and inaccurate calorie numbers on your smartwatch, yet somehow this is a reliable method for weight loss?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The real way to lose weight and keep it off<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CICO method has failed us \u2014 but good data hasn&#8217;t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows us that we should approach the idea of weight loss from a different perspective:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise is good, but the main focus of exercise should be to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/09\/25\/why-does-metabolic-health-matter\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maintain metabolic health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rather than lose weight. This means building muscle and strengthening our cardiovascular system.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle is more metabolically active than fat tissue, and the more muscle you build, the more metabolically active you will be. In fact, one of the best predictors of the quality and length of your life is the amount of muscle you maintain. It is critically important to focus on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/08\/21\/how-cardiovascular-training-can-increase-your-lifespan\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">resistance training<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at every stage of your life.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat real food. Abs are made in the kitchen, and whole, real good is the best way to shed extra pounds and promote metabolic health. Focus on unprocessed foods and animal proteins as much as possible, and reduce your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/03\/13\/the-real-cost-of-cheap-food\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intake of fast food<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that offers little to no caloric value.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Developing a metabolically sound weight loss plan<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CICO model didn&#8217;t set out to sabotage our health. In fact, it was<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.thefastingmethod.com\/first-law-thermodynamics-irrelevant\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">derived from physics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a better way to understand our bodies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But as we know, humans are not a clean physics system.
