{"id":17772,"date":"2022-11-20T00:30:46","date_gmt":"2022-11-20T00:30:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/?p=17772"},"modified":"2022-11-20T00:30:46","modified_gmt":"2022-11-20T00:30:46","slug":"why-children-need-metabolically-healthy-diets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/11\/20\/why-children-need-metabolically-healthy-diets\/","title":{"rendered":"Why children need metabolically healthy diets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve all been victims to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/07\/11\/how-the-food-pyramid-has-failed-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">food pyramid\u2019s shoddy science<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 and its misinformation about \u2018healthy\u2019 food has trickled down to our children as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The effect of this is now very apparent. Childhood obesity rates have skyrocketed, and are getting worse. Nearly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/obesity\/data\/childhood.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20% of children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or one in five, are within the 95th percentile of their BMI. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2021\/p0824-youth-diabetes.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC has reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that from 2001 to 2017, the rate of type 2 diabetes in the 10-19 age bracket almost doubled from 34 per 100,000 to 67 per 100,000.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s no secret that high levels of obesity are driving up <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/11\/06\/the-connection-between-metabolic-health-and-heart-disease\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">markers for chronic disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As a heart surgeon, I have observed the average age of my patients getting younger. It&#8217;s not unusual for 40- or even 30-year-olds to end up on my operating table, likely resulting from bad dietary habits that may have been built during their formative years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our current approach to dietary \u2018wellness\u2019 is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/07\/11\/how-the-food-pyramid-has-failed-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">failing our children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and their futures. It\u2019s therefore critical to reset our perspective of dieting and model healthy habits \u2014 setting our kids up for success around a framework of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/07\/24\/the-7-principles-of-metabolic-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metabolic health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The problem with poor childhood diets<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a temptation to think that eating metabolically healthy is less important for children than adults. After all, pre-adolescents have lightning fast metabolisms that seem to sidestep the problems that come from sugary or carb-heavy diets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of this is just an illusion. Metabolic health is just as important for children as it is for adults, although kids do have some dietary leeway that grown people don\u2019t enjoy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, children are far more active than adults and are growing all the time, which takes more energy (i.e. caloric intake) to accommodate effectively. Plus, children also consume a higher amount of carbohydrates without triggering a fat storage response, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/04\/24\/the-effect-of-keto-diets-on-metabolic-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enter and exit ketosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> just from an overnight fast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That being said, unhealthy foods for adults are just as unhealthy for children. The damages of poor metabolic health are cumulative, and if we&#8217;re not establishing good eating habits now, we&#8217;re setting our children up for a lifetime of metabolic problems. We&#8217;re also getting them <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/07\/17\/metabolic-health-mental-health-and-addiction\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">addicted to sugary foods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and seed oils right from the beginning, giving their bodies more time to develop chronic diseases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you look at infant formulas, for example, you&#8217;ll see an ingredient list of high carb foods and processed fats from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/02\/06\/are-vegetable-oils-healthy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vegetable and seed oils<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The nutritive value may appear high at first, but upon closer inspection, you\u2019ll see they\u2019re not the types of nutrients that support optimal metabolic health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children need healthy diets to grow into healthy adults. Even the popular low-carb keto diet was originally created as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epilepsy.com\/treatment\/dietary-therapies\/ketogenic-diet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lifestyle treatment for childhood epilepsy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, resulting in some excellent healthcare outcomes. Contrary to popular belief, low-carb diets are not dangerous for children, and may ensure they grow up to be metabolically healthy in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To summarize: do children have more capacity to hide the bad effects of poor dietary habits? Yes. But does a metabolically unhealthy diet set up bad habits that carry on for years? Most certainly.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Encouraging your children to be metabolically healthy<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The answer to promoting metabolic health during childhood is not prohibiting certain foods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you genuinely want your kids to be metabolically healthy, don&#8217;t force them to do anything. Instead, try to model healthy behaviors in your own dietary choices. They&#8217;ll see the benefits, hear your explanations, and understand the science in action, which encourages them to follow suit on their own journey to metabolic health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some tips for modeling a healthy, metabolically friendly lifestyle for your children:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat whole, real foods. This means a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/11\/28\/forget-superfoods-here-are-the-top-3-foods-to-eliminate-to-improve-your-heart-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diet rich with animal proteins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, leafy greens, dense fruits, nuts, and seeds. Children watch what we eat more than we realize, and are quick to model their guardians\u2019 behavior during their formative years. My kids, for example, order their burgers without buns when we go out for dinner \u2014 just because they see mom and dad doing the same.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/08\/07\/7-daily-exercises-to-boost-heart-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get active together<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Whether it&#8217;s going for walks, riding bikes around the neighborhood, or getting in the squat rack, being active together as a family goes a long way in building metabolic health.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promote healthy sleep habits. A good night&#8217;s sleep is critical for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/11\/06\/the-connection-between-metabolic-health-and-heart-disease\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">optimizing metabolism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and children need even more sleep than adults do. There is no set range that accommodates every child\u2019s needs, but encourage between<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kidshealth.org\/en\/parents\/sleep.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8 and 12 hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of sleep per night. Again, modeling good sleep hygiene shows children how important rest can be, making them more likely to copy you in their adult years.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2022\/07\/31\/how-to-eat-metabolically-healthy-with-5-different-popular-diets\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changing your diet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could very well change your family tree.
