{"id":9821,"date":"2021-07-04T13:25:09","date_gmt":"2021-07-04T13:25:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/?p=9821"},"modified":"2022-03-11T06:48:25","modified_gmt":"2022-03-11T06:48:25","slug":"who-are-you-staying-healthy-for","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/07\/04\/who-are-you-staying-healthy-for\/","title":{"rendered":"Who are you staying healthy for?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Being an overweight heart surgeon didn\u2019t feel right.<\/p>\n<p>My weight didn\u2019t make me any worse at my job, but I felt like a hypocrite. \u201cHere I am, operating on people and telling them how to live healthily, while at the same time unable to control my own weight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was destined to be a heart surgeon who underwent heart surgery!<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who has struggled to control their weight knows that it\u2019s not too difficult to lose some pounds when needed. People drop 10, 20, 50 pounds or more. The real challenge is keeping that weight off. It\u2019s a never-ending war.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s not like there\u2019s a lack of motivation: most people are aware of the health risks associated with obesity, like diabetes and heart diseases (which, along with other cardiometabolic conditions, <a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/2021\/06\/19\/what-is-metabolic-health-anyway\/\">accounted for 89% of COVID-19 hospitalizations<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The reality is that doing things for ourselves is rarely a powerful motivator. Often, it takes a health scare to make us lose weight, cut back on the drinking, or stop smoking.<\/p>\n<h4>Being healthy for someone else<\/h4>\n<p>\u201cBeing bad feels pretty good, huh?\u201d So said the \u2018criminal&#8217; character Bender in the classic \u201880s movie <em>The Breakfast Club<\/em>. When it comes to lifestyle choices, many would agree with him.<\/p>\n<p>People get pleasure from smoking cigarettes. Alcohol can help us to relax and feel good. Foods can feel comforting. When something makes us feel happier, of course we don\u2019t want to give it up. Of course we will find reasons to keep doing it. <em>Of course<\/em> we will justify our actions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll stop next week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s my only vice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone does it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But while making better choices for our benefit isn\u2019t the best motivator, doing it for someone close to us certainly is.<\/p>\n<p>In my case, everything changed when I became a father. I had people who mattered more to me than I did, who I wanted to be there for. My priorities changed immediately. Suddenly, it was important that I was alive in the future.<\/p>\n<p>My patients have told me similar stories, that they made their health a priority because somebody else was so important to them.<\/p>\n<h4>Health is within your grasp<\/h4>\n<p>Being overweight or unhealthy now doesn\u2019t mean you have to stay that way forever. <a href=\"https:\/\/ovadiahearthealth.com\/old-site\/our-team\/\">I was fat my entire life until the age of 40<\/a>, and now I\u2019m healthier than I have ever been.<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t stress this enough: <em>you<\/em> can be a healthy weight. Whether you want to do it for yourself or for somebody else, you can achieve it.<\/p>\n<p>My advice is don\u2019t focus on an outcome to begin with. Don\u2019t worry about the scale or your waist size. Instead, follow some basic steps to get the ball rolling.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest factors within your control are what you eat, how much you move, and how much you sleep. Many people can make significant improvements by eating more whole, unprocessed foods, going for a daily walk, and getting 7-9 hours of sleep per night.<\/p>\n<p>Start with that.
